There is a big difference in the quality of your kitchen cabinets' drawers if they are secured with nails or have dovetail joints. Kitchen cabinets that have nails securing the kitchen cabinet drawers together can come apart very easily with heavy usage. On the other hand, because of the special dovetail joint technique, a kitchen cabinet drawer that has a dovetail joint, is very resistant to being pulled apart. Dovetail joints are used to join the sides of a drawer to the front and back of the kitchen cabinet drawer, keeping the kitchen cabinet drawers strong and sturdy. |
| The way dovetails work is: a series of pins cut to extend from the end of one board, interlock with a series of tails cut into the end of another board.
The pins and tails have a trapezoidal shape locking into each other. Once fastened together, the wood of the drawer naturally expands locking them together.
A wooden dovetail joint requires no mechanical fasteners. You may add glue for an even studier dovetail draw. Especially when it comes to the wear and tear that a kitchen cabinet drawer goes though, dovetailed drawers are definitely the way to go for a higher quality, long-lasting kitchen cabinets. |
